We need to maintain a good balance of voices across the sections, so please contact our membership co-ordinator firstname.lastname@example.org before attending a rehearsal
What to expect
You’ll be invited to a rehearsal as a free taster, and if you like us you continue coming along on a weekly basis. Until you pass audition, a fee of £5 per week is required from your second visit, in cash or transferred to our account.
Auditions are to perform a song from our repertoire as part of a quartet, in front of the music director and lead of the section you’re in. We’ll provide sheet music and a learning track (sound recording), as well as running the song during rehearsals and offering practice auditions. Words and notes must be off music to pass audition.
As we are a barbershop chorus, we have the following voice sections (more info):
- Lead: typically sings the tune
- Bass: typically provides the bass line
- Tenor: harmonises above the tune
- Baritone: harmonises below and around the tune
We rehearse on Tuesdays from 6:30pm to 9:00pm at the London Welsh Centre on Gray’s Inn Road, WC1X 8UE. We are a committed group of singers and regular attendance is very important, including arriving in time for important warm up and vocal technique exercises.
Members are expected to maintain at least a 75% attendance rate (ideally 100%), which includes being present for the warm up. Obviously, there will be exceptions, and as much notice in advance is appreciated.
Performances and convention
The main event of the year for us is the Sweet Adelines International regional convention each May and every member is expected to attend. Next convention is 10th-12th May 2019 in Cardiff.
In order to prepare for convention, we go on a weekend (overnight) retreat in January/February and hire a coach to give us more guidance on improving our vocals and performance. The chorus learns a great deal during retreat, so all members are expected to attend. Next retreat is 16th-17th February 2019, in Hertfordshire.
London City Singers is a bookable chorus and have several live performances throughout the year, as well as holding our own concerts to raise money for chorus costs or for charity. Attendance at these is usually by individual’s availability, but members are strongly encouraged to attend wherever possible.
Members dues and other fees
On passing the audition, the monthly fee is £30 for those 26 years and older, and £25 for under 26 and students.
As we are chartered through Sweet Adelines International, every member of the chorus is required to join this organisation as well. International fees are US$100 (roughly £80) per person annually for those 26+, or US$50 (roughly £40) for under 26.
There’s a £40 deposit for competition and performance costume, which is given back to you when all items are returned to the chorus.
As this is a lot of upfront cost you can opt to spread payments over a few months so participating in the chorus is affordable.
