We always love to have newcomers, though currently to ensure we have a good balance of voices, we’re primarily looking for low voices to go into our bass section (you should be able to sing an E flat below middle C comfortably).
What to expect after your ‘taster’ attendance
Should you decide you would like to join after your first visit, let our membership coordinator know and then continue coming along on a weekly basis. While you are a prospective member, we’ll ask you to pay a fee of £5 per week (preferably in cash on the day) from your second visit.
After your second visit, you will be given a song from our repertoire to learn, which you will have to prepare for an audition after around four rehearsals.
You don’t need to be able to read music because we will give you a recording of your part (you’ll receive it by email soon after your second visit), plus we usually spend some time in each rehearsal on the piece. Please feel free to ask your section leader for assistance or to arrange practice auditions.
Auditions are held in a private area away from the chorus. You will sing in a quartet scenario, without using the sheet music, with your section leader and the musical director or assistant director present. Auditions can be arranged for before, during or after rehearsal.
We rehearse on Tuesdays from 6:30PM to 9:00PM. We are a committed group of singers and regular attendance by our members is very important.
Once you’ve passed your audition, know that we ask all members to attend a minimum of three out of four rehearsals a month, ideally all. Obviously, there will be exceptions, and as much notice in advance is appreciated.
Performances and convention
The main event of the year for us is the Sweet Adelines International regional convention which happens in May – every member is expected to attend.
In order to prepare for convention, we go together on a weekend retreat (usually in January/February). We hire a coach to give us more guidance on improving our performance and we have a lot of fun! As we do a lot of important work there, all members are expected to attend.
London City Singers is a bookable chorus and have several live performances throughout the year, as well as holding our own concerts to raise money for chorus costs or for charity. Attendance at these is usually by individual’s availability, but members are strongly encouraged to attend wherever possible.
Members dues and other fees
On passing the audition, the monthly fees are £30 for members 26+ and £25 for members under 26.
As we are chartered through Sweet Adeline’s International, every member of the chorus is required to join this organisation as well. International fees are US$100 (roughly £80) per person annually for members 26+ or US$50 (roughly £40) for members under 26.
Within a few months of you joining, we will ask you to pay a £40 deposit for competition and other costume needs for performances. This is given back to you when all items are returned to the chorus.
We’re aware that there is a lot of upfront costs! So you will be offered the possibility to spread out payments over a few months so that participating in the chorus stays affordable. The finance coordinator will contact you once you’ve passed your audition to talk you through all of this.
